Rhythms, visual, sonic.
Layers of rhythm.
Lay a rhythm.
LayeRhythm, pronounced lay-uhr/rith-uhm.
Imagine a musicians’ jam session where the band is compelled to keep the dancers’ pace instead of the other way around. [...] what’s distinct about LayeRhythm is the way it bridges the two groups with crowd participation.
Since 2015, LayeRhythm has been presenting interactive performances/parties, where some of the greatest musicians, dancers, emcees, DJs and vocalists from NYC’s vibrant street and club cultures gather and collaborate to create improvised, in-the-moment communal experiences. These immersive sessions have transformed thousands of audience members and participants’ relationship to music/dance, building community and spreading street and club dance culture on concert stages, as well as a wide range of other venues, reflecting the roots of genres like house, locking, flexn, litefeet, popping, and krump, largely rooted in Black and LatinX heritage.
LayeRhythm typically tours with its NYC-based cast while inviting local street and club dance artists to join each performance. This approach creates a strong sense of community and provides presenters with a unique opportunity to build meaningful connections with local club and nightlife scenes. In addition to its 90–120 minute “interactive concert” presentations, the company also seeks to collaborate with dance presenters and club promoters on long-format party events, sharing the full spectrum of their artistry in a communal and celebratory setting.

In SWITCH, the audience is LayeRhythm’s muse. Through a series of games, audience ideas are collected and announced by the MC. Performers instantaneously draw from their personal experience and unique artistry to turn audience ideas into music, lyrics and movement.
