José Cruzata Revé is a Cuban-American saxophonist based in Brooklyn, New York. Originally from Holguín, Cuba, he grew up in a musical family, surrounded by the sounds of Afro-Cuban styles like Rumba, Danzon, Cha Cha Cha, Timba, Son, and Changüí. After studying at the National School of Art in Havana, he began performing and touring with several prominent Cuban jazz and salsa bands, including Juan Formel y Los Van Van, and flamenco dancer Joaquín Cortés.
Since moving to NYC in 2014, he has been a sought-after musician, playing at many of the city’s top jazz clubs. His own trio performs José’s original compositions and classic standards, blending Afro-Cuban rhythms with African-American music into a fresh and exciting sound. He is also the saxophonist and one of the composers for Afro-Brazilian tap dance company Music From The Sole, recently performing at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the Guggenheim, Joyce Theater, and Lincoln Center, and has taught classes and workshops around NYC for organizations like the Afro-Latin Jazz Alliance.
In 2023, Jose released his first album, Árbol Genealógico, in which he explored his musical and personal roots in the Afro-Cuban traditions, along with jazz and contemporary classical forms. He was awarded a prestigious 2024 Chamber Music America New Jazz Works grant for his upcoming second album, Tilling the Land, to be released in 2026.
